Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

To better understand how dental insurance works, you’ll need to commit a few terms to memory:

  • The maximum is a capped-off amount of money that your dental insurance company will pay for your treatments over the course of a calendar year. Once you exceed your maximum, you’ll be required to pay out-of-pocket for treatments.
  • The deductible is a set amount that your insurance company will require you to pay out of your own pocket before your benefits kick-in.
  • The premium is a monthly or annual amount that you pay to receive your benefits.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Not every dental insurance plan is the same, which is why it’s crucial to contact your provider directly if you’d like to find out whether they’ll cover a specific treatment. However, most plans determine coverage based on a 100-80-50 structure. This means that they’ll cover 100 percent of basic preventive care like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of treatments like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures like tooth extractions.
